About London Heathrow Airport terminal 1
Terminal 1 was opened in 1968 and was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1969. In 2005, a substantial redesign and redevelopment of the terminal was completed, which saw the opening of the new Eastern Extension, doubling the departure lounge in size and creating additional seating and retail space. The terminal has an area of 74,601m2. It is home to Heathrow's second largest carrier, bmi, and airlines belonging to the Star Alliance. It is set to be closed and demolished around 2013/14 to enable the construction of the second phase of the new Terminal 2, scheduled for completion in 2019.
Terminal 1 is home to all Heathrow's domestic flights, as well as some European and long-haul destinations. 19 airlines operate from Terminal 1, carrying over 25 million passengers each year.
Check-In and Flight Departures for domestic destinations operate from the first floor of Terminal 1, on the left of the concourse. Flight information is displayed on monitors at the entrance of the terminal and check-in zones are clearly signposted. Check-in desks for international flights are located in the middle and on the right of the concourse. Flight Arrivals are located on the ground floor for international passengers and on the first floor for those arriving from the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Boarding usually begins around 45 minutes before departure.
Self Service Check-In
Self service check-in is available with some airlines; it is simple and safe to use and can save you a lot of time at the airport. Self service check-in is available both online and in kiosks located at the airport. Terminal 1 has kiosks located near the standard check-in desks. You can use this service if you are flying with:

Arrivals for international passengers are located on the ground floor of Terminal 1. Domestic, Republic of Ireland and Channel Island arrivals and baggage reclaim are located on the first floor of Terminal 1. International connections do not require going through Immigrations or Customs but all International to Domestic connections do.
Domestic to International connecting passengers can use special Immigration check points if baggage is through-checked.
